Snowboarding History

To be able to fully appreciate the sport of snowboarding, it is also necessary to take a look at snowboarding history and find out how snowboarding actually evolved. By understanding its origins, more players can find new ways and methods to snowboard better, and to maintain a good amount of respect and admiration for the pioneers of the sport who had made snowboarding possible today.

The history of snowboarding started with very simple origins. No one is quite sure who actually came up with the idea of sliding down a hill, because sleds have been around for the longest time, and have always been a favorite pastime for children in centuries past. What is the history of snowboarding?

It is important to talk about the sled in particular. A sled, also known as a sleigh, is a device with runners that you can use to go down a hillside very fast, and is often used as a means of recreation. These sleds are often ridden on in a sitting position, and for areas with no inclines, can even be used for animals such as dogs or oxen to pull. To better understand the history and evolution of snowboarding, it should also be pointed out that its predecessor, the sled, is an integral part of culture itself; in fact, Santa Claus, a myth almost as old as many civilizations, is said to have used a sled or sleigh to deliver his gifts.
A short history of snowboarding reveals the fact that it is a very recent sport. The person first credited with actually constructing the snowboard was one Sherman Poppen who bound skis together with a rope at the end as gift for his daughter, and called it the Snurfer. Before long, he started hosting Snurfer competitions and began to manufacture this device. A little later, another man, Dimitrije Milovich started producing snowboards after experimenting with sliding down a hill on a cafeteria plate during college. The idea quickly caught on, and soon enough, more and more people began taking part in the sport, eventually making snowboarding history.

According to the history of snowboarding, there were many other different kinds of materials used to make snowboards – skateboard decks with plastic shells, wood with a piece of carpet stuck on top, and even aluminum sheets. Though these seem funny to imagine today, it was through these innovative ideas that made up snowboarding history that snowboards were able to be developed into what they are today.
